I am positive I didn’t experience all the hiccups that The Don’s Edition is hiding and this is even more disheartening considering that none of these problems cropped up in my extensive playing time of the Xbox 360 version.īut much like when Clemenza tells your character that Sonny Corleone’s a good guy underneath his gruff exterior, the same can be said for what The Don’s Edition brings to the game play table. I got out and walked down invisible stairs back to the street.
One such instance had my character and his car sent flying into the sky, only to become lodged into the side of a very tall building. Outside of cut scenes, other problems I discovered were the random propelling of your character and vehicles into the sky. Another cut scene problem comes in the form of the game’s inability to balance different tracks of sound, playing unimportant background discussion at a higher volume than your exchanges with a character. You go to talk to someone and they get stuck running in a circle or shaking uncontrollably. When going into a cut scene, if any character on-screen is not in the right location at the right time when the widescreen frames come up, they get stuck in an animation loop, with your hired hands falling prey to this more often than anyone else. While none of the ones that cropped up in my playing time caused me to lose game progress (either in-game or by corrupting save data), it’s hard to believe that EA allowed a game to ship with such amateurish problems. Almost as bad is the host of embarrassing bugs that riddle the game.

With a year between the PS2 and PS3 versions, it is nothing short of a slap in the face to see the graphics treated with such disdain. There is little to nothing that’s awe-inspiring from a next-generation vantage point, leaving the fluid frame rate as the only facet worthy of praise. Textures are flat and blurry, animations are robotic and rigid, and with the characters models receiving little in the way of changes, they’ve gone from being impressive to just above average. Despite being released nearly six months after the Xbox 360 version, there is a distinct drop-off in quality which, considering the 360 version’s already dated look, is a huge disappointment. Upon booting up The Don’s Edition, you will immediately notice the most obvious feature of the title – the graphics.

Is it really worth $40 more dollars for a minor graphical upgrade and refined game play? If you have the cash, you could make a far worse purchase, but any budget-conscious gamer should flat-out refuse this Don’s offer, as the difference between new and old is just too blurred.Īnyone who is yet to experience another version of The Godfather should check out my review of the Xbox 360 version, as the core game has seen only minor changes, so I’m going to focus on what is new or altered here. With a backwards-compatible PS2 version waiting in stores for the Greatest Hits $20 price point, this creates a huge conundrum. But there is no excuse to justify the graphics, which appear to be nothing more than a simple cleaning up of the PS2 version, while the minor bugs running rampant degrade The Don’s Edition in a way that insults not only the player, but the developer as well – we both should expect better. This is the first PS3 sandbox-style game too, so there is that hole to fill. New players are, arguably, getting the top version of an already excellent game, while returning players are treated to a wealth of new and improved content to enjoy, increasing the already high fun factor. However, as yet another version of an existing game, it’s hard to know who to recommend the PS3 version to. If you are one of the few souls who have yet to experience the classic film and novel in digital form then there’s no time like the present to amend your ways and join ‘The Family’ with haste, as the innovative controls, varied missions and excellent ambiance make this anything but just another ‘GTA clone’.

There’s just no stopping the Godfather! After beginning life on the Playstation 2, Xbox and PC in March of 2006, the newly created sandbox-style series took time to visit the Xbox 360 and PSP near the end of the year, before settling down on the PS3 and Wii this March, with the PS3 version sporting a subtitle to end all Corleone subtitles: The Don’s Edition. If you are one of the few souls who has yet to experience the classic film and novel in digital form, there’s no time like the present! However, as yet another version of an existing game, it can be hard to know who to recommend the PS3 version to, as new players are getting a solid version of an already excellent game, while returning players are treated to a wealth of new and improved content to enjoy.
